HALEY

My parents knew nothing about my dating life. I dropped the fork and slid my hair behind my ear. Then I listened intently to what he had to say.

Amused by my reaction, he smiled and said, "He's coming along, Paul has some learning to do."

I sighed in relief, knowing he didn't blow my cover. I turned to mom, then dad and smiled. I nodded in appreciation to Darcy. He smiled back. The conversation at the dinner table was perfect, with mom and dad acting like first time lovers and Darcy intermittently stealing glances my way.

Something within me thought wow wouldn't it be great to be with him?

Turned on, I slid my legs together under the table to stop my essence from trickling down to the floor.

Stop it, Haley, this is an impossible hill you can't possibly get over. He is off-limits, for crying out loud he's your parents' friend. He can't be yours. I guess a girl can dream right. I learned a lot from the dinner, including how his wife passed away from Cancer a few years after Paul's birth, and how he never remarried. I learned how even though he'd made billions, he still gave away a lot of his money to charity. I also learned he saved my dad when they were younger and both in the military for a short time.

Soon dinner ended, and he said he'd to head back to his private villa not far away. I felt sad; I didn't want him to leave. I figured he'd stay the night, but that didn't happen.

I was sad to see him go, mom would notice, and then all hell would break loose. There's no way dad would let his friend date me. He stayed a little while after dinner. I helped mom clean up while Darcy had a conversation with dad on the balcony. I asked mom more about Darcy's wife, mom smiled and said how much they loved each other and how heartbroken he was when she passed. Mom said he's a great guy and whoever he ends up with would be Lucky and extremely happy.

I smiled, and for a moment here, I wished it would be me. Darcy bid my folks' goodbye, leaned in and gave me an endearing kiss on the forehead, and with that, Dad walked him to his car.

Once he left, I retreated to my room. I noticed I'd missed five calls from Paul.

Then my cell buzzed.

I got a text from Paul:

Where are you? I've been trying to reach you.

I sighed and thought about how to respond. I started writing a text when mom walked in; she said, "Oh no looks like Darcy left his wallet, could you take it over to him? I can't do it tonight dad's taking me out on a date."

I smiled and said, "Sure, mom, I can do that."

Mom asked, "Are you sure?"

I nodded, nerves fluttered in my belly. I couldn't wait to see Darcy again. I yearned for his touch.

So I said, "Yeah, mom."

Dad walked in and asked mom if she was ready?

She said yes and told Dad I'd return the wallet to Darcy.
